Germany has a new man in the dugout, and it's a familiar face. Jurgen Klopp has been confirmed as the new head coach of the German men's national football team, signing a four-year deal that will keep him in charge through the 2030 World Cup.

From Red Bull to the Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB)

Klopp steps into the role after a break from club management. Since leaving Liverpool in 2024, he had been working as Red Bull's Head of Global Soccer, a role he's now stepping away from to take on international football for the first time in his career. The German Football Association (DFB) moved quickly to secure him, and reportedly won't owe Red Bull a compensation fee, instead donating to the "Wings for Life" charity as part of the arrangement.

Why now

The appointment follows Julian Nagelsmann's resignation after Germany's exit from the 2026 World Cup, where the team was knocked out in the round of 32 on penalties to Paraguay. It continues a run of disappointing tournaments for Die Mannschaft, who haven't lifted a major trophy since winning the World Cup back in 2014.

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf didn't hold back on the significance of the hire, saying Klopp embodies passion and the ability to inspire people, and was the federation's first choice for the job. Sporting director Rudi Völler echoed that sentiment, pointing to Klopp's track record of developing young talent and getting teams to perform under pressure.

Klopp's response

Klopp himself struck a humble tone in his first statement as coach, saying the national team can unite the country like almost nothing else, and that he's looking forward to building a team that fights for each other and gives fans something to rally behind.

The team behind the team

Klopp won't be doing this alone. He's bringing in a familiar coaching staff: long-time collaborators Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders, plus Sven Bender. Krawietz and Lijnders were both part of Klopp's trophy-laden spells at Dortmund and Liverpool, including the 2019 Champions League and 2020 Premier League wins.

What's next

Klopp's first match in charge comes fast: Germany face the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League on September 24, followed by Greece three days later. Klopp has signed a 4-year deal with DFB which takes him through to Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup. The pressure is on Jurgen to end Germany's decade-long trophy drought.
