What is the Emirates FA Cup?
The FA Cup is officially the Football Association Cup, the oldest domestic football competition in the world. First played in the 1871/72 season, it has been contested every year since (except during both World Wars), currently in the 145th season.
What makes the FA Cup unique is its open format. Over 700 clubs from every tier of English football enter each year, from non-league clubs to the biggest names in the Premier League. The draw is entirely open meaning Accrington Stanley could face Arsenal. The beauty of everyone competes with no seeding.
Sponsored by Emirates, the competition formally begins its qualifying rounds in August, with Premier League and Championship clubs entering at the Third Round Proper in January. From there, it's straight knockout football all the way to Wembley Stadium, where the FA Cup Final takes place in May. The winner earns automatic qualification to the UEFA Europa League.
FA Cup - Record Holders
Arsenal hold the all time record with 14 FA Cup wins, the most of any club in the competition's history. The Gunners have been FA Cup final runners up on a further seven occasions, making them the most decorated club in the history of the trophy.
Manchester United are second with 13 titles, their most recent coming in 2024 when they beat Manchester City at Wembley. Chelsea and Liverpool have each won the cup eight times, while Tottenham Hotspur have won it eight times too, most recently in 1991.

Wembley Stadium — Home of the FA Cup Final
The FA Cup Final has been held at Wembley Stadium since 1923, when Bolton Wanderers beat West Ham United 2–0 in the first ever final at the ground. The match became known as the White Horse Final, when police on horseback helped manage a crowd estimated at 200,000.
The original Wembley was demolished in 2000, and the final temporarily moved to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. The new Wembley Stadium opened in 2007, with Chelsea beating Manchester United 1–0 in the first final played there, Didier Drogba scoring the only goal.
Today's Wembley holds 90,000 supporters and is the largest stadium in the UK. FA Cup Final tickets at Wembley are among the most in-demand sporting tickets in Britain. The semi finals have also been held exclusively at Wembley since 2008, meaning all four of the last four clubs receive equal allocation with no home advantage.
