What is the UEFA Champions League?

A short history of the competition

The competition traces back to 1955, when it launched as the European Champion Clubs' Cup, open only to the champions of each major European league. It was rebranded the UEFA Champions League in 1992, and that rebrand came with a major structural shift: what had been a straight knockout tournament grew into a longer format built around a group stage and two-legged ties. That same overhaul reshaped the rest of European club football too. The old European Cup Winners' Cup disappeared, and the UEFA Cup evolved into what is now the Europa League.

The UEFA Champions League is the most prestigious and most widely watched club football competition in the world. Every season, Europe's finest clubs compete over eight months of league phase and knockout football for the right to call themselves champions of Europe.

Real Madrid sit clear at the top of the all-time roll of honour with 15 European Cup and Champions League titles, ahead of AC Milan on 7, and Bayern Munich and Liverpool level on 6 apiece, with Barcelona on 5. Cristiano Ronaldo is the competition's record scorer with 140 goals and also holds the record for most appearances, while Lionel Messi sits second on the all-time scoring list with 129. The final alone is watched by hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide every year, making it comfortably the most-watched annual club fixture on the planet.

How the Champions League format works in 2026/27

For roughly two decades the competition ran with a 32-team group stage, drawn after a series of qualifying rounds, split into eight groups of four, with the top two in each group advancing to the round of 16. That changed from the 2024/25 season, when UEFA replaced the group stage with a single 36-club league phase.

Under the current format, all 36 qualified clubs sit in one combined table. Each side plays eight matches against eight different opponents, drawn from four seeding pots based on UEFA coefficient, four at home and four away. The top eight finishers in that table qualify directly for the round of 16. Clubs finishing 9th through 24th go into a two-legged knockout play-off round for the remaining eight knockout spots. Anything below 24th is eliminated from Europe entirely, with no parachute into the Europa League.

For the 2026/27 season specifically, 29 teams qualify directly for the league phase, with the last seven places decided through a qualifying campaign that starts on 7 July 2026 and runs through play-offs in late August. The league phase draw takes place on 27 August 2026, and Matchday 1 kicks off in early-to-mid September. From the round of 16 onward, ties are played over two legs, with the away-goals rule no longer in use since its abolition in 2021, so level aggregate scores now go to extra time and penalties rather than being decided by away goals. The final itself remains a single match, held on a Saturday in late May or early June at a neutral, UEFA-selected venue.

The winner earns a place in the following season's UEFA Super Cup against the Europa League champion, along with an automatic route back into the next Champions League league phase if they don't already qualify domestically.

Where else will Champions League matches be played this season?

Beyond the final, Champions League nights take place at some of the most famous stadiums in world football: the Santiago Bernabéu (Real Madrid), Camp Nou (FC Barcelona), Allianz Arena (Bayern Munich), Anfield (Liverpool), the Etihad Stadium (Manchester City), Parc des Princes (Paris Saint-Germain), and the San Siro, shared by AC Milan and Inter. Each carries its own atmosphere, and each is worth browsing individually on LOVE1TICKET if you're planning a European away trip rather than following one specific club.

When is the 2026/27 Champions League final? Where is it being played?

The 2026/27 final will be played on Saturday, 5 June 2027, at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid, home of Atlético Madrid since 2017. It will be the stadium's second time hosting the final, following Liverpool's 2019 win over Tottenham there. Madrid will become the joint-most prolific Champions League final host after London once this final is played, its sixth time staging the showpiece match. That follows the 2026 final, held at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, the first time Hungary has hosted the fixture.

Because final tickets are heavily allocated to the two finalist clubs and to UEFA's own pre-sale ballot months in advance, official public supply is extremely limited. Verified resale listings on LOVE1TICKET typically become the most realistic route for fans without a club allocation.

How much do Champions League tickets cost?

Prices vary enormously depending on the club, the opponent, and the stage of the competition, but a few patterns hold across most fixtures:

  • League-phase matches typically run somewhere between 50 and 100 percent above that same club's regular domestic league ticket price.
  • Knockout-round matches push higher again, often 100 to 200 percent above domestic pricing, since every tie carries elimination stakes.
  • Marquee opponents (a Real Madrid vs Manchester City tie, for instance, or any fixture involving Barcelona, Bayern Munich, or PSG) sit well above the average for that round regardless of which club is at home.
  • Final tickets operate in an entirely different market, shaped by UEFA's ballot process and secondary listings that tend to firm up in the final days before kickoff.
  • Smaller-market qualifying and early league-phase fixtures, featuring clubs like Sabah FC, Shamrock Rovers, or Vikingur Reykjavik, are consistently the most affordable Champions League tickets available, often a fraction of what a Big Six European night costs.

Browse Champions League tickets by club

LOVE1TICKET lets fans search Champions League tickets by club just as easily as by round, covering the biggest names in the competition, including Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, and Ajax, alongside every other side that qualifies for the 2026/27 league phase. Because the league-phase draw only confirms opponents in late August, it's worth tracking your club's page or setting a price alert rather than trying to book a specific fixture before the draw is made.

Can I get Champions League tickets as a fan from overseas?

Yes. Love1Ticket serves fans from over 100 countries attending Champions League matches across Europe.

Why Champions League tickets are worth planning ahead for

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Europe's biggest clubs all compete for the trophy each season, and these top clubs draws demand both home and away. Champions League tickets on LOVE1TICKET let you follow your own club through the league phase and into the knockout rounds, or simply pick a marquee European night at a stadium you have always wanted to visit. Either way, buying early gives you first pick of seating and protects you from the price swings that come with a big draw.

Are Champions League resale tickets authentic?

On a reputable marketplace, yes. Every listing on LOVE1TICKET comes from a verified seller and be checked before it's delivered to you. Genuine platforms won't let an unverified listing go live, and orders are backed by a buyer guarantee that covers denied entry, outright cancellation, or a postponement with no rescheduled date.

When will my Champions League tickets arrive?

Most tickets are delivered electronically by email and SMS, typically arriving in the days before kickoff, with the latest deliveries landing around 24 hours out as a standard anti-fraud measure across major European football. A small number of venues still issue physical tickets, usually shipped by tracked courier.

Why are Champions League ticket prices sometimes well above face value?

As with any secondary marketplace, listings are set by individual sellers responding to real demand rather than a single fixed face value. Big Six clashes, historic European rivalries, and final-day tickets typically trade well above face value, while routine midweek league-phase fixtures involving smaller clubs are often at or below it.

What happens if my Champions League match is postponed or cancelled?

A postponed match is almost always rescheduled, and your existing ticket stays valid for the new date with no action needed on your part. If a fixture is cancelled outright with no replacement date set, you should expect a full refund from a reputable marketplace, typically processed within about two weeks.

Can I buy Champions League away tickets?

Yes, LOVE1TICKET lists both home and away allocations across the verified-seller network. Away tickets are released on a club-by-club basis, supply is capped, and demand for away days at big European nights is high, so it pays to book as soon as a fixture and opponent are confirmed.

Is it better to buy Champions League tickets before or after the group draw?

Once the league-phase draw is made in late August, prices for standout fixtures tend to move quickly, so buying soon after the draw is confirmed usually beats waiting. For qualifying-round matches, where opponents are known much earlier, there's less urgency, and prices are typically lower to begin with.
