England's World Cup 2026 Group Guide: Croatia, Ghana & Panama
England are heading to North America this summer with one mission: bring football home. Thomas Tuchel's Three Lions have been drawn in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana, and Panama and while it's a group England should navigate, every opponent comes with a warning attached.
Here's everything you need to know about who England face, when they play, and what they need to do to progress.

Opponent 1: Croatia
Coach: Zlatko Dalić
Key Players: Luka Modrić, Joško Gvardiol, Mateo Kovačić, Ivan Perišić, Andrej Kramarić
The opening game is the big one. Croatia are the most dangerous side in the group and England fans know it. They knocked England out at the 2018 semi-finals and have been a near-permanent fixture in the latter stages of major tournaments ever since, finishing runners-up in Russia and third in Qatar.
The good news? This is an ageing side in transition. Captain Luka Modrić, the 2018 Golden Ball winner, is now 40 and playing at AC Milan. Ivan Perišić. who scored in both the 2018 semi-final against England and the final against France is 37. The engine room of the golden generation is running on miles.
The new generation is promising, though. Joško Gvardiol (Manchester City) is one of the best defenders in the world, and Mateo Kovačić (also Man City) gives Croatia real quality in the middle although Kovačić endured an injury-hit season and his sharpness will be closely watched. Dalić's side topped their European qualifying group with seven wins from eight, conceding just four goals, so they arrive in form.
England's last meeting with Croatia was a 1-0 win at Euro 2020 at Wembley. A repeat here would send a big statement.
Opponent 2: Ghana
Coach: Carlos Queiroz
Key Players: Antoine Semenyo, Iñaki Williams, Jordan Ayew (captain), Thomas Partey
Ghana are heading to their fifth World Cup and carry significant attacking firepower, but they arrive at this tournament in some disarray. Carlos Queiroz only took charge in April 2026, replacing Otto Addo after a run of poor friendly results, giving him weeks rather than months to prepare.
The biggest blow is the absence of Mohammed Kudus. The Tottenham midfielder who scored the goal that sealed Ghana's qualification against Comoros underwent surgery for a quadriceps injury in January and failed to recover in time. Defender Mohammed Salisu also misses out with a ruptured ACL.
That said, Ghana's attacking options are genuinely dangerous. Antoine Semenyo is the one to watch. Manchester City paid £62.5 million for him in January 2026 after he lit up the Premier League with Bournemouth, and he arrives at the World Cup as one of the most explosive wide forwards in the tournament. Iñaki Williams, the Athletic Club forward who chose Ghana over Spain and Leicester's Jordan Ayew give Queiroz real pace and directness up front. Thomas Partey, despite limited playing time at Villarreal this season, anchors the midfield and brings crucial experience.
England have never faced Ghana in a competitive match. Don't take that as a sign it'll be easy.
Opponent 3: Panama
Coach: Thomas Christiansen
Key Players: Rolando Blackburn, Adalberto Carrasquilla, César Yanis
Panama are the group's most modest opponents on paper but England fans with long memories will recall that in 2018, they put up a fight before going down 6-1 in Nizhny Novgorod. The Panamanians are physical, organised, and will make life uncomfortable.
Led by Danish coach Thomas Christiansen (yes, the former Leeds United manager), Panama qualified from CONCACAF by finishing first in their group ahead of El Salvador, Suriname, and Guatemala. This will be only their second World Cup appearance.
The Panama game kicks off at 10pm UK time on Saturday 27 June at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey is the final group fixture and could be a dead rubber if England have already confirmed their progress, or it could matter enormously. Either way, fans planning to attend will be watching from one of the most iconic venues in world sport, with the New York skyline in the distance.

What Does England Need to Do to Qualify?
At the 2026 World Cup, each group has four teams, and the top two automatically advance to the Round of 32. The third-placed team may also progress as one of the best third-place finishers across all 12 groups, but that's not a path England should be planning around.
In short: finish in the top two of Group L. Win two of their three games and qualification is virtually guaranteed. Even a win and two draws would put England in a very strong position.
The tiebreaker system works as follows: if teams finish level on points, it's decided by head-to-head points, then head-to-head goal difference, then head-to-head goals scored, and so on.
If England win Group L outright, they would face a third-placed team in Atlanta in the Round of 32 on 1 July and would be kept apart from the other top seeds (Argentina, Spain, France) until the semi-finals at the earliest, assuming those nations also top their groups.
England's Base Camp: Kansas City
During the tournament, England will be based at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Missouri one of Sporting Kansas City's elite training complexes, set within the historic Swope Park. Kansas City was identified as England's preferred location as far back as January 2025, and the announcement was confirmed in February 2026. Interestingly, Argentina will be based in the same city, at the Sporting KC Training Centre making Kansas City arguably the most competitive base camp hub in the entire tournament.
The location makes logistical sense: Kansas City is reasonably central, and if England advance past the group stage, the Round of 32 match (for a third-place finish) would actually be played at Kansas City Stadium.
The Bigger Picture: Can England Win It?
England go into this tournament as genuine contenders. Harry Kane is captaining the side and arriving fit at a major tournament after years of injury concerns. Tuchel has had time to implement his system. The squad depth is arguably better than at any point since 1966.
