History of Anfield Stadium
Named after the surrounding neighbourhood, Anfield first opened its doors in 1884. It was originally home to Everton until 1892, when a falling out between the club's committee and John Houlding, who owned the land, changed everything. Everton relocated to Goodison Park, less than a mile away, while Houlding went on to found Liverpool Football Club to keep Anfield in use. The stadium has seen several major renovations over the years, most notably the Main Stand expansion completed in 2016. That £114 million project boosted capacity from 45,000 to 54,000. More recently, Liverpool FC pushed through another expansion in 2021, taking total capacity up to 61,276, making Anfield one of the largest grounds in the Premier League.
Anfield Facilities
The Spion Kop, known simply as, The Kop, is Anfield's southernmost stand. This single-tier terrace sits right behind the goal, opposite the Anfield Road Stand, and is widely seen as the emotional heart of the stadium. The players emerge from the tunnel straight onto the pitch via the Main Stand, the largest of the four stands, holding up to 20,676 fans. It faces the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand, previously known as the Centenary Stand. Two gates, the Shankly Gates and the Paisley Gateway, honor former Liverpool managers Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.
