History of Anfield Stadium
Named after the surrounding neighbourhood, Anfield first opened its doors in 1884. It was originally home to Everton until 1892, when a falling out between the club's committee and John Houlding, who owned the land, changed everything. Everton relocated to Goodison Park, less than a mile away, while Houlding went on to found Liverpool Football Club to keep Anfield in use. The stadium has seen several major renovations over the years, most notably the Main Stand expansion completed in 2016. That £114 million project boosted capacity from 45,000 to 54,000.
