Where is Champions League Final 2027: New Format, Netflix Rumours, and the Road to Madrid

3 July 2026By Love1Ticket Team4 min read

European football's top-tier competition is entering another period of change. After UEFA changed the group stage into a 36-team league phase which was a breath of fresh air after the same format for years on end. UEFA are set to modify the 2027/28 tournament and offer a shake-up of broadcast rights. This time, ,there's talk of Netflix. Here's what's confirmed, speculation, and where the final of the champions League is being played in 2027.

An Opening Night Built Around the Champions

From the 2027/28 season, the competition will begin with a single fixture rather than a full round of matches. The reigning European champions will host that opening game at home, on the Tuesday of matchday one, with the rest of the field following across Wednesday and Thursday. UC3, the joint venture between UEFA and the European Club Association that oversees the competition's commercial direction have confirmed that the model is borrowed from American sport, where leagues like the NFL and NHL open their seasons with the defending champion under a spotlight of their own.

From a commercial perspective, UEFA wants a high-profile marketable moment to launch the new season of the champions league, rather than dilute the show. This means, Paris Saint-Germain will welcome the competition back at the Parc des Princes as holders.

Thursday will also join Tuesday and Wednesday as a Champions League matchday from 2027/28, part of a six-year commercial strategy running to 2032/33.

Can You Watch the Champions League on Netflix?

Not currently. UC3 is preparing to take the post-2027 media rights to market, and Netflix has been named among the streaming platforms, UEFA is understood to have sounded out directly.

The interest isn't hard to explain: Netflix is one of the largest streaming platform, globally and has been building a live-sports track record, from an NFL Christmas Day fixture to Boxing PPV (except not PPV, included in subscription). Netflix also holds the rights to the 2027 and 2031 Women's World Cups. Industry estimates put the value of the next global Champions League rights cycle at close to $5.9 billion a year, a figure large enough to interest almost any major streaming player.

Nothing has been signed. Amazon Prime Video retains a share of UK rights under the current cycle, and Disney+ has just moved into live women's football, so even a Netflix deal would most likely mean one slice of a more fragmented rights picture, not a complete takeover of the competition.

Where to Watch the Champions League in the UK

For the remainder of the current cycle, through the 2026/27 season, UK coverage is split between two broadcasters. Amazon Prime Video holds the exclusive top pick fixture every Tuesday night, included with a standard Prime membership. TNT Sports carries the bulk of the remaining schedule including the play-off round, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final all available through Discovery+ or as an add-on via Sky, Virgin Media and EE.

A side note; Paramount+ has agreed a four-year deal to take over the UK's primary domestic rights from 2027/28 through to 2030/31.

Where is the The Champions League Final in 2027?

2027 UCL Final will be played in Madrid, at Atletico Madrid’s Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium.

The venue for the 2026/27 final of Champions League for the second time in under a decade, following the all-English final of 2019, when Liverpool beat Tottenham.

Since re-opening in 2017, the stadium has become one of the more tech-packed venues in European football with a fully LED-lit ground with a capacity above 70,000, and its return to the final rota reflects that reputation as much as Madrid's standing as a host city.

Full details on the venue, and everything else fans need to plan for the final, are on Love1Ticket's stadium page for the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

Book accommodation early, as the final in Budapest last season left fans scrambling for rooms. As soon as the Final Is confirmed, book your Hotel ASAP as rates in any host city climb especially from the semi-finals

Love1Ticket partners directly with hotel comparison sites, so fans can compare rates near the stadium and book via the platform with the most competitive rates.

Rooms can be secured well in advance, with free cancellation available on most bookings, meaning there's little downside to locking in a price early and adjusting plans later if your team's route to the final changes.

The practical advice is simple: book before the finalists are known. That's the point at which room rates in Madrid are likely to move fastest, and early planning is the only reliable way to avoid paying a premium for it.

Details on tickets, hotels and travel for the 2027 final will be updated as they're confirmed. Live hotel booking pricing is available on Love1Ticket.
