The ground was built in 1909 and officially opened in February 1910, designed by Scottish architect Archibald Leitch. Construction cost £90,000 at the time, roughly £13 million (in today's money), however, the cost to rebuild a stadium of this magnitude in the modern era, would cost in the hundreds of millions (maybe over a billion). Nearby is a statue of George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton, known together as the "United Trinity." The trio scored 665 goals combined for the club and were central to Manchester United's rise to European success in 1968. It was installed in May 2008, exactly 40 years after the club's first European Cup win.
 
A statue of Sir Alex Ferguson, standing nine feet tall, was unveiled outside the stand bearing his name in November 2012, marking his record tenure as manager and is considered the greatest ever football manager. The most recent addition is a statue of Jimmy Murphy, unveiled in May 2023 outside the Stretford End. Murphy served as coach and assistant manager under Busby and played a crucial role in helping the club recover after the 1958 Munich air disaster.
